What to Avoid

Sometimes using the right cookware can be an afterthought when people begin their natural journey because the direct health effect may not be so clear. It is important to know that non-stick cookware may have the potential to be harmful if chemicals get into the body. Harm may also occur when people inhale fumes from high temperature cooking.

The real concern with Nonstick Cookware is in the original manufacturing where perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is used to coat the cookware.  Although PFOA is burned off during the process, small amounts may be present in the final product. PFOA has been linked to male infertility, pregnancy difficulties, high cholesterol, thyroid problems, and certain cancers.

SLN suggests avoiding non stick and aluminum cookware. Cookware that is safe include:

  • Stainless Steel
  • Cast Iron and Enameled Cast Iron (naturally non-stick)
  • Glass
  • Stoneware
