Toxic Body Burden and Why You Can’t Lose Weight

Bruce Blumberg of the University of California, Irvine, coined the term ‘Obesogens’ which are environmental chemicals linked with fat gain.  Before Obesogens, obesity was thought to stem from a poor diet and lack of exercise but now scientist are proving that toxic exposure especially to Endocrine Disrupters (chemicals that mess with hormonal pathways) increase a person’s susceptibility to weight gain.

“Obesogens, such as the extensively studied fungicide tributyltin (TBT), can act in a variety of ways to promote fat storage and adipose tissue production, often by disrupting hormonal signaling.”

Scientists believe chemicals used in fungicide and disinfectants, flame retardants, pesticides, insecticides, plastics, fertilizers and non stick coatings are the culprits and should be avoided at all costs. Interestingly, scientist view the dramatic rise in obesity rates among US adults over the past few decades as a indicator that toxic exposures cause harm across generations, that the Obesogens that Grandma was exposed to may also directly affect her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and so on.
