I have asked the men in my life what are the key things they think about when buying personal products. The five determining factors they identified were:
- are quick and easy to apply
- won’t irritate skin and cause a rash
- don’t have a overly strong or feminine scent
- won’t leave unwanted residue
- have natural, non-toxic ingredients
How AWESOME is it that buying natural, non-toxic products is a key decision maker for men?? It looks like my job here is done, right? Hardly the case but we are on the right track.
It’s so great that men are becoming more vocal about what they put on their bodies because many men’s products, including products marketed to teenage boys, contain a slew of unsafe chemicals of concern. Phthalates (used in fragrances) have been found in higher levels in men who use products like aftershave or cologne compared to those who do not use these products. There is also a growing amount of research showing that exposure to certain chemicals can affect the sexual and reproductive health of men including:
• Hormonal changes
• Erectile dysfunction and impotence
• Testicular and prostate cancer
• Low sperm counts
• Male infertility
Human studies also show that exposure to certain chemicals during child development can lead to malformations of the reproductive tract and harm prostate development, breast development, testis size, and puberty onset. Therefore, it is critical for men, and tween/teen boys to use natural products for men or organic men’s products over conventional brands. The products of concern include hair dyes and styling products, shampoos and conditioners, body sprays and cologne, aftershave, and antiperspirants.
Clearly the negative outcomes that men want to avoid including skin irritations, strong scented products, and yucky residues stem from products being made with harsh chemicals and fragrances. It’s great that there are companies that make natural products for men to address these concerns.
Men want to use the most efficient products that cover all the bases so that time can be saved to, you know, be awesome. Here are our favorite natural products for men.
Shampoo/Conditioner: Many shampoos strip hair of natural oils because they act as a harsh detergent and use synthetic chemicals including Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). Check out our Ingredient Watch List for Hair. Some shampoos also contain mineral oil, which is a byproduct when gasoline is distilled from crude oil. It’s added to shampoo to thickly coat strands which can give hair an artificial shine. Mineral oil can’t absorb into skin so it becomes a barrier on our scalp, preventing oil from being released which can cause unwanted hair conditions. Using a Shampoo Bar made with nourishing oils not only prevents natural oil loss but adds healthy oil to your hair and scalp.
Men want hair products that are efficient. This bar won't strip your hair of natural oils which means you don't need a conditioner to replace what was washed out saving you time in the shower.
Deodorant: Many conventional deodorants kill off odor-producing bacteria but include chemicals that irritate sensitive underarm skin. Aluminum based antiperspirants temporarily plug the sweat ducts under your arms which prevent you from perspiring. Studies suggest that chemicals in deodorants and antiperspirants, including aluminum, are absorbed into the skin and can mimic estrogen, which promotes the growth of breast cancer cells. Since sweating is a natural way to rid your body of unwanted toxins, you should avoid using aluminum based antiperspirants.
Men want deodorants that are non-toxic, last all day with one application, and don’t have an overwhelming scent. Try switching to an aluminum-free and paraben-free, natural deodorant like the ones here that are long lasting and use natural scents that will keep you odor free all day. One is a cream based deodorant and the others are sticks for easier use. We love both!
Lotion: Our skin is our largest organ and anything we put on it is absorbed into our bodies. Many conventional lotions are loaded with chemicals that can damage skin and may be harmful to our health. There are dozens of ingredients currently being used in top-brand body lotions that range from questionable to potentially hazardous. Check out our Ingredient Watch List for Body. Many of these synthetic chemicals are skin irritants, skin penetrators, endocrine disrupters and are carcinogenic and should be avoided at all costs.
When looking for the right skin moisturizer, men want something that does not smell too strong and doesn’t leave skin greasy. We have found a super-efficient, natural plant based lotion perfect for hands, body and face (3-in-1) made with pure essential oils for a light, masculine scent that is not overwhelming. Absorbs easy with no greasy residue!
Hair Styling: As mentioned above, many hair styling products have harsh ingredients which include toxic chemicals that can damage hair and cause health problems. Read our Ingredient Watch List for Hair. For example, in many hair products geared toward African-Americans, studies have identified hormone-containing hair products linked to early puberty in children and higher rates of several different types of cancer in hair salon workers. Needless to say, it is very important to use caution when buying hair styling products. Natural products for men should always be considered over conventional products that use synthetic chemicals.
Finding the right non-toxic hair styling product can be difficult. Men want to use products that are not sticky, do not leave a residue, or look too shiny or wet. They want products to hold hair in place without looking like any product was added. This is our favorite Pomade that seals in moisture while providing definition and control without weighing down hair, giving it a natural but styled look.
Shave Cream: as mentioned above, our skin is the largest and porous organ. Anything absorbed through our skin goes directly into our blood stream. When skin is irritated or broken, let’s say after shaving, more chemicals are able to pass through the skin into our bodies. Today, shaving creams have tons of toxic ingredients, including phthalates, parfum, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), sodium laureth sulphate (SLES), propolene glycol, mineral oil and triethanolamine (TEA). Propolene glycol is a humectant and is more frequently found in antifreeze and brake fluid. Triethanolamine, better known as TEA, is an emulsifying agent, meaning it helps keep the oil and water from separating. It is know in the cosmetic industry as a skin irritant, and many formulas containing TEA are found to be contaminated with nitrosamines, which are linked to cancer. Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) mimics estrogen and sodium laureth sulphate (SLES) contains a known carcinogen called dioxane.
There is nothing more annoying than getting a rash after shaving. Men are looking for shave creams that do not have harsh chemicals and fragrances that can irritate skin. They prefer ingredients that help achieve a closer shave, provide sufficient lubrication, and deliver razor relief. These shave creams are the best to achieve all 3 results.
